Murshid Samuel Lewis was born October 18, 1896,
in San Francisco. Happy Birthday!
Aka "Sufi Sam" or Sufi Ahmed Murad Chisti, he was an American mystic & horticultural scientist who founded the Sufi Ruhaniat International. After a lifetime of spiritual study, primarily with Hazrat Inayat Khan & Nyogen Senzaki, Lewis was recognized as a Zen master & Sufi murshid (senior teacher). His most enduring legacy may be the creation of the Dances of Universal Peace, an interspiritual practice that has spread worldwide.

Shana Smith
is best known as Florida singer Shana Banana, a guitar-toting nature mom, and she is also a marine biologist-yogi who co-directs the Gainesville Retreat Center with her husband, Dan Smith. We have had some lively Dances of Universal Peace there.
In the introduction of her new book, Meditation for Moms and Dads: 108 Tips for Mindful Parents & Caregivers, available on Amazon.com, Shana stressed that mindfulness, achieved through meditation, can help us "fulfill our ultimate job as parents and effect compassion, peace & loving kindness.

"The purpose of spiritual development is to understand the nature of life beneath joy and sorrow and so find peace in every experience."

"DiAnahita deserves our kudos for pouring all her life spirit into the dances and the teachings that underlie all the practices. Nowhere else have I seen such dedication to the One as expressed and embodied by Murshid Samuel Lewis. We have a fountain of grace and it is right here in our own back yard thanks to DiAnahita Kanoy. There is the joy, the serenity, and the pleasure of one another's company each month at the dances. And there is also something deeper still that we are steadily nurturing within ourselves and one another over time, a light that never fades but grows stronger with each passing year. For that we all owe a debt of gratitude to DiAnahita!"
